To my awesome readers:
Les Scammell from the Radical Blogger is sponsoring a protest on his blog against the slaughter of whales. He is asking only that you add your blog URL and name in a comment on this 1000 Blog Protest Against the Slaughter of Whales page.
I’m not usually political on this blog, but I have great belief in the power of the blogosphere to make real change when we all stand together. If you read this blog regularly, you know I’m an extreme animal lover and that certainly extends to wildlife that cannot defend itself against modern hunting technology and sheer brute force.
Les is working toward amassing a list of 1000 (or more!) bloggers who are opposed to the slaughter of whales for research purposes. Particularly in Japan, there are very few regulations placed on whale hunting and these creatures are being killed indiscriminately. This includes the slaughter of babies and their mothers whales.
If you’d like to join Les, me and all the other bloggers speaking about against this inhumane practice, all you have to do is add a comment to the post linked in this article. You don’t have to write a post or anything and the thirty seconds you’ll spend doing this could really benefit many truly magnificent creatures.
Thanks for your support!
Sara

Thanks for this post. As an animal lover I signed up too and I hope it will help.

Thanks sharing this petition Sara. I don’t know if I am going to sign it yet. I need to understand what research is being done. However, if it is just of researching perfume and makeup and other frivolous things, I will sign the petition. I think that I have a lot of reading to do on the Radical Blogger Blog.

I am a huge advocate against unnecessary animal cruelty ! thanks for sharing this petition!
Thank’s for a great post. I am an animal lover too and It’s so sad to hear about what human did to them
This is incredibly sad. “Research” seems to be a code word, the one thing a lot of people won’t complain about. I sent Canon a letter about the matter, as a faithful customer, since they advertise about ’shoot it with a camera’ …
Stephen Pinker is one of people who’s been talking about moral progress. In the Dark Ages, in Europe, they used to burn cats to death in public for peoples’ amusement. Today, it’s a struggle, but a lot of people in the world believe it’s wrong - immoral - to inflict suffering on another creature if it can be avoided. That seems to apply more to people like everyone reminding this, than the people who decide that whaling for “research” is ok. But the more of us believe it, the more that belief spreads, like a positive feedback loop.

Great, so basically Japan is trying to make whales go extinct just like their Yangtze River dolphins. I’m signing the protest to stop this cruelty.
I’ll definately check the petition out. Thanks for sharing!
this petition is great ! its great that you posted this petition up!
Thanks for the info!
I’m from Canada. I don’t eat whale meat, and I think it’s very sad to hunt them.
But let’s say you live on a volcanic rock and you must fish the seas to survive. And you live this way for thousands of years. Will whaling suddenly cease when the need for their meat is no longer necessary?
The whaling must stop, but charging in with a sanctimonious ethnocentric attitude will not deter these hunters from doing what they feel is their birthright .
I have mammals in my backyard going extinct, but that hasn’t stopped local activists from traveling halfway around the world to protest the whale hunt. They make a big noise, but ultimately, they show their own arrogance.
If you want to change the behavior of others, education can be far more effective than intimidation.
I realize this pitch is just for a petition, but I’ll still tread carefully before endorsing something.
@Monavie;
Two things:
(1) Japan isn’t trying to drive whales extinct. How would it benefit whalers to kill off the last of their pray? Extinction is one possible outcome of whaling policy … but nobody in their right mind thinks Japan is trying to drive whales out of life. To say they are, is to set up straw men.
(2) The Yangtze-River dolphin is probably extinct … in China! You can’t say “Japan is trying to make whales go extinct just like their Yangtze River dolphins.”
If we want to be taken seriously, we need to start by clearly speaking the truth. The #1 thing people can do to derail an effort like this, is to make the people behind it look ignorant. We all need to be careful not to provide good sound bites for anybody who has an interest in whaling.

Im not having problem with the eskimos killing whales, bears and any other animal, there every single part of the animal, and the skin they make clothes from. But brutally killing animal like tigers, etc. for chinese medicine, thats not ok.
Anne’s last blog post..Så er der det med søgninger som jeg ikke forstår?
Nice site Sara and it is very nice to see that someone is posting on Les’s cause. I have always clicked with Les very well and consider him to be a life long friend I hope to meet one day, which may not happen because he has 4 girls who I am sure drive him nuts. Na I don’t think they do but I like to bug him about it once and a while..lol

You guys are all so awesome! I can’t believe the great response this post has received. I rarely post anything unrelated to making money online, but every once in awhile something like this really grabs hold of me and this is the biggest audience I have access to.
I am so happy to hear that so many of you are animal lovers and feel the same way I do about stuff like this. When it comes to hunting for survival like Anne mentioned, I can understand the reasoning. However, blatant brutality is never okay and I hope the power of the blogosphere can make a difference here.
Thanks again for all your great comments and support - I don’t know Les, but I’d also like to thank him for bringing this to my attention.

“And shaking out the folds of my robe, I said, So may God send out from his house and his work every man who does not keep this agreement; even so let him be sent out and made as nothing. And all the meeting of the people said, So be it, and gave praise to the Lord. And the people did as they had said.” (Nehemiah, 5, 13).
