I wanted to write a quick post about the recent mentions of various charitable and/or political topics at Pajama Professional.

When I first started Pajama Professional, I kept it entirely on topic. The articles pertained to making money online and that was it. My aim was to always follow the basic social rule of safely avoiding any discussions related to religion or politics. I realize that money is generally the third item in that list, but given the focus of this blog, I can’t exactly avoid discussions about money. My reason for avoiding these topics was that I did not feel my personal views were relevant to the subject matter here and I didn’t want to alienate anyone with my personal opinions. I wouldn’t call myself an extremist by any means, but I am quite passionate about equal rights, animal rights and other issues that pertain to the health and happiness of living creatures. When Pajama Professional was focused solely on MMO, that passion was irrelevant.

As the readership has grown and I have expanded the topic scope of Pajama Professional to include personal development, my views regarding sharing my opinions and beliefs have slightly changed. For me, religion and politics are a natural part of personal development. This leaves me with no real way to avoid sharing my opinions and opening up discussions about politics or religion – at least occasionally – if I want to truly include personal development as a topic area at Pajama Professional. Let me clarify quickly by saying that I will never tell you that in order to be personally or financially successful you need to follow a certain religion or support a specific set of political values. Anyone who does try to tell you that is working from an agenda of selfishness and personal gain. When I directly discuss politics or religion, it will most likely be as a request for support regarding a particular charitable cause or event or, in the case of religion, comparing beliefs across various faiths.

For example, you might have noticed this week that I posted about the 1,000 Blog Protest Against the Slaughter of Whales and SIDS Educational Services. Generally, these are the types of charitable events and organizations that I will bring up here. If I can leverage my readership to help out a cause in which I believe, I will attempt to do so. As I said, I am quite passionate about maintaining and/or improving the health and happiness of all living things.

I am writing this post just in case any of you were concerned that I was going to start using Pajama Professional as some sort of political platform. I felt it was important to explain my motivations and plans regarding charitable mentions, considering I went from virtually none to two in one week. From time to time I might urge you to check out a charitable or political event or organization. While religious beliefs and political views can shape us in quite dramatic ways, I don’t wish to allow those topics to pull Pajama Professional too far off the main topics and goals. Pajama Professional has never had any sort of agenda in terms of trying to convince anyone to agree with my viewpoints and it will remain that way.

Pajama Professional was started as a tool for both me and my readers to teach, learn, share and move toward success with online business and personal happiness. I feel blessed that I have a regular, interactive readership and I would never take you guys for granted or jeopardize your interest in this blog by turning it into some sort of vehicle for my own political/social/religious agenda. Above all else, the goal of Pajama Professional was and is to maintain an easily accessible, free resource for anyone interested in online entrepreneurship.

  • Your political views are so similar to mine and I was really glad to see you posting about this. It is getting harder and harder for me to keep politics, religion, and business seperate. It was nice to know that other people are having the same issue. Keep up the incredible work and Thank you for posting few Political items you do
  • It is hard to blog and not touch on a hot topic every once in awhile. Some people are easily offended or perhaps they go out of their way to find something to complain about. It is impossible to go through life and never hurt someone's feelings, whether we mean to or not.
  • Religion and politics are definitely my hot button topics, but I really don't write about them very much; however, when I have, I wrote extremely scathing articles that actually got a ton of response. I am just plain anti-political and think our entire political system is a corrupted special interest group. I'll put it this way, the two presidential candidates we have will be the worst this country has ever had. Ok, enough of my pessimism!

    I agree that if you're going to write about these subjects, write something that is useful, not just to attack some group or to get your two cents in about some party you love. I'm against both parties currently so I have nothing to say.

    As far as religion...if you want to be hated, question someone's religion. That will get it done!!!!!

  • Tread lightly, my friend! You're completely right ... but you're also dangerously close to the third rail.

    I think when a person advocates a belief, that should stand on its own. Religion can be a powerful force ... but it's not so much of a justification. And it's also not as monolithic as people make out. If somebody wants to discriminate against somebody else, and claims religion as their reason ... chances are everybody else in that faith doesn't agree about discriminating against people. Still, whether it's because of a sacred book, or because of something they read on the internet, people need to evaluate the idea on its merits. And if we manage to do that ... people will have no choice but to become more tolerant, because that's the only thing that logically makes sense.

  • TRU, I am certainly not saying that religion should be taken lightly. And I completely agree that we need more tolerance. I guess when I say "religion" I am referring more to certain values and beliefs held by certain people who are members of certain religions. For example, when I say that I believe homosexuality is perfectly acceptable and not a choice, most people who disagree with me would be doing so based on their religious beliefs.

    I have nothing against any specific religion as such, I just don't agree with the teachings of hatred and the negative judgments often carried around by those who are members of certain religious groups.

    I never have and never would dislike or treat someone negatively simply because of their religious beliefs. Even if I don't agree, it's not my place to find anyone's faith but my own.

  • I think we need more tolerance in todays world. Religion is nothing to mess with.
  • I it is not good to "hurt the religious heritage of people" it is rightly called as "cultural scandal"
  • I think this is much less of a big deal than you seem to ... I'm not sure how most people feel these days, but I'm curious?

    We all know we should save money, and we all know a bank account isn't a very good way to do this. There are any number of "socially responsible" mutual funds. I read about these when The Economist covers them, but that's not often enough.

    Anyway, I think most people can agree on most political "issues." Your whales post helped prove that, and it's wonderful how many people went out of their way to get involved! As long as you stay away from the third rail, I think most people really do agree on the basics. We all want to make the world a better place; we might disagree on some of how to do that, but common sense ( hopefully! ) pulls most people together on most questions, other than the very controversial ones. SIDS seems to be another case where everybody agrees we should do something...

    So: thanks for doing your part in the world! And good luck, as far as integrating this into your blog without changing your focus too much, or alienating everybody. I have a feeling you'll manage to do both pretty well...
