I’m not sure if this applies outside of Western Washington, but right now U.S. Bank and Albertsons have a really cool deal going on for the holidays. I’m not sure how long it lasts or exactly what regions it applies to (aside from mine – Kitsap County), but the end result is a new free checking account and $75 in free groceries! Here’s how it works:

  • Go to a U.S. Bank. I’m not sure if this applies to only U.S. Banks inside Albertsons stores and what vicinities it reaches so I’d call around to make sure the offer is valid there.
  • Open a new checking account. This is completely free and the account continues to be free. (side note: While chatting with the supercute teller, I found out that U.S. Bank is one of the few banks out there that don’t check credit or past bank history so if either of those has stopped you from opening a free checking account then this is definitely the deal for you)
  • Deposit $75 in your new account.
  • Add $75 to a gift card. The Bank rep will then get an Albertsons gift card and put the $75 you just deposited onto the card. You can use that $75 immediately.
  • Get $75 free! Overnight your new checking account will be re-credited with the $75 you used to purchase the gift card.

And that’s it. For someone (like me) who puts on a very small Thanksgiving dinner this deal will pay for almost the entire thing. That’s huge! The process may sound a bit convoluted, but it only takes about ten minutes and you have $75 free dollars and a brand new checking account. If you don’t want the checking account, you can close it at any time.

There is one more perk to this. If you refer other people and they give your name when they sign up, you are entered into a drawing for another $75. Not bad, huh? Also, if you go to the U.S. Bank in Silverdale, WA, I think they have a rule that you must be a really cute twentysomething female in order to be hired. They’re adorable, charming and have great teeth. And now that I have an account there I have an excuse to go back. Weeee!

Remember two things: (1) this is a limited time thing and available to a limited area so call up before you trek over to U.S. bank and (2) My name is SARA CHRISTENSEN.

  • A new banking service is available. Let’s hope its scope may increase in length and breadth.
  • Before the financial crisis you could make quite a bit of money on these kind of offers if you also had the opportunity to open business accounts, but they seem to have dried up.

Unfortunately no US Bank near me or I would done this offer.
  • Good offer. $75 is quite big enough for me.

Took me a couple of readings to figure it out (basically deposit $75, buy $75 and they'll deposit back $75 so you end up with 150 in account and $75 on gift card.) I'm definately going to check it out in SoCal though- $75 is my bi-monthly grocery budget exactly so it'd be worth it and I'm thinking of switching checking accounts anyway. I'm not happy my WaMu of Love is now Chase.

    Thanks for the note!
  • I didn’t know that there are still banks in the United States that do not bother to check past bank history…but this is good news especially for people who want to build or rebuild their credit history. And the U.S. Bank’s offer is quite tempting because $75 free money is a great deal.
