Is MANswers Racist?

Posted in Off Topic
manswers

MANswers is, overall, a show I enjoy watching. This might seem surprising since I am certainly not in the demographic audience for which the show is created. I’m not a man. In fact, being a lesbian might make me even less targeted simply because so many lesbians are labelled as anti-male. I don’t fall into that crowd, I’m more of a tepid feminist, I guess. I believe in equality in the true sense, none of this battle-of-the-sexes bullshit. Yes, men and women are different – get over it. Anyway, I try to avoid my socio-political viewpoints on this blog simply because they don’t belong here, but I felt I needed to explain a bit so you’d understand why MANswers isn’t exactly “my type” of show.

Basically, I like trivia. That’s the only way I can explain it. It is usually the type of entertainment I avoid, but I find the questions – albeit often gross – interesting. Sure, I could do without the objectification of women and general vulgarity of the show, but I understand that the show is on Spike and intended to be exactly as off-putting as it is.

I also understand that the audience for which MANswers is intended would be just as bored or annoyed by my favorite television shows (Project Runway, anything on the Discovery Channel). The overabundance of poop and sexist boob remarks aside, I also enjoy the mix of drunk-asshole-on-the-street interviews and expert opinion. Taking the often lewd tone of the show in stride, there are two things that actually bother me about this show.

First, I hate – and I mean HATE – the announcer. Most of the time I try to tune him out. It’s just so over-done fratboy. I understand that the idea is to speak – both in tone and voice – to the intended audience, but it’s just so over-the-top. I can imagine that even the fratboys watching this show often look at one another and say, “Dude! This guy is soooooo annoying!” Yes, I’m stereotyping, but isn’t that the point of finding a demographic?

As an aside, there was a commercial during one episode of MANswers that intrigued me. It was for Women’s Extenze. Apparently it’s “our turn” (the “our” being women who have found their libidos waning and their husbands none to pleased with it) to experience the wonder of Extenze. Um…? I understand a guy wanting his girl’s libido to match his, but will it really make my penis bigger?

Anyway, moving on.

The second thing that bugs me about MANswers is even more concerning. I understand that the show is not designed to be politically correct or socially intelligent, but – and I hate to throw this word out there – I often find the show flat-out racist. I guess they can get away with the exclusive use of Asians whenever martial arts or samari swords are mentioned. However, can they explain why nearly every bully or guy with a gun is African American?

It seems to me that every time MANswers mentions someone being shot or beat up, the reenactment features some big African American guy – often sporting a shiny grill? I’m not black or male and I find this extremely offensive. It perpetuates the idea that African American men are universally violent, dangerous guys. That sucks, MANswers.

I know the show itself – and perhaps even one of the points of the show – is meant to be as vulgar and “Dude!”-oriented as possible, but I think that their casting goes a bit too far. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just being oversensitive?

I see most of your points but the racist thing just doesn't fit. I have only seen maybe one season of the show but i have seen episodes with white guys getting beaten up, holding guns, and even being hit by cars.

  • Hey Sara,

I have seen Manswear many times, but I skipped the episode that you have talked about.

However sometimes I felt that it is going racist, but most of its episodes are not like that.
  • In the name of comedy, people can get away with anything. Think of all the stand-up comedians with racist bits in their act. Some people may get offended, but you have to realize that the absurdity of the stereotypes is often half the joke.
  • I can't abide racism. What we need is a great big melting pot ;o)
  • I don't know if it is racist. Honestly, I don't watch the show. How about you, what do you think?
  • I would not think of seeing content geared for a man's viewpoint as entertainment, but as an irritant. Thanks for the heads up.
  • Is the show expected to carefully manage how many people from each race are featured as certain characters. I think it becomes more racist when things are defined that way. In some cases it leads to less qualified people getting positions as the boss has quotas to fill.
  • Hey that is awesome...
  • Hi,
It is really a nice post with have a good article. It is really nice with a healthful info.keep it up this nice sharing....
  • It's amusing that you're harping on a blatantly sexist show about being racist. If they got away with being so sexist, I'm sure they can just as easily get away with being racist. When it's in the name of humor, people can get away with a lot.
  • hi,
Girls are obviously waaay more sensitive than you. But my boyfriend flips out and yells at me whenever I cry. And yes I can be over-sensitive sometimes, but that's when I need him to be sweet the most, not yell at me.(which I have told him) Do sensitive girls annoy you? Any advice?
  • Very Nice post as always.I am following regularly this blog.Very interesting. Thanks for sharing all the information with us.Keep it up.Keep blogging.
  • I still refuse to let it control my life, I have good days and bad days, on my bad days, the ringing gets so loud that I can’t hear people on a cell phone anymore.  My sleeping has improved a great deal, so as long as I can continue to get a good nights sleep, then I find that I can pretty much deal with anything that the following day might have in store for me.
  • So Unfortunately comedians basically have a freepass when it comes to racism. They can poke fun at anyone and it's all in good humor. With this particular show they are dealing with a less sophisticated audience.
  • Is ManSwers racist? I think so. Aside from this I hate the show because it seems shallow and boring, isn't it?
  • I will be visiting more often as you have done a good job, keep going..

I would agree with all the of below--- aluminum briefcase: absolutely! All comics think they don't have to be accountable for anything that they say if Someone finds it funny. I think they should be accountable because someone always is on the butt end of a joke and it's not always fair.
  • Unfortunately comedians basically have a freepass when it comes to racism. They can poke fun at anyone and it's all in good humor. With this particular show they are dealing with a less sophisticated audience. So they sometimes have to spell things out. In this case it sounds like they are using these racial stereotypes to connect with their audience. It may be a tad racist, but I'm not really against it. People need to lighten up and not take things so seriously. Politically correctedness is often excessive. Is the show expected to carefully manage how many people from each race are featured as certain characters. I think it becomes more racist when things are defined that way. In some cases it leads to less qualified people getting positions as the boss has quotas to fill.

  • I've watched from time to time the show MANswers, but to be honest I've never gotten the vibe that it is a racist show. Maybe I haven't seen it enough to get that vibe, But I can agree with you Sara that some of the stuff is a little bit over the top.

    Till then,

    Jean
  • I have never seen the show, I had no clue if there is one that exists. But I totally agree with your viewpoint. We have conditioned our minds so perfectly, that some people cannot get out of it, so whenever they think of a scene like that, they imagine an african american doing that.Whats happening to the world. If those people were the cause, then perhaps there would be no crime in rest of the world where they dont exist. Its hightime that the world gets a wakeup call.
  • no MANswers is like that... i guess as i have seen only two episodes of it... and the African American thing is right i also noticed that in the couple of episodes.
  • excellent.....

I've never seen the show, and, thanks to your description, now I know I don't want to. I deal with a male-dominated world every day, I would not think of seeing content geared for a man's viewpoint as entertainment, but as an irritant. Thanks for the heads up.
  • Manswers is not thaaaat racist. It's just a vulgar show on late nite tv. :) i've watched it when im extremely bored.

  • The show do not seems racist . It such a big altercation of lesbian.
  • I agree with rick, but i think that the show not is racist, but they are in the borderline
  • Well, I've seen the show a couple of times and it has a unique audience... definitely younger guys burgeoning with testosterone who respond to visual sound bites that have a measure of the shortest sentences with the most T & A. Racist? I don't know if that it is intentional but it could borderline rancid.
  • Yes this is right that it could be border line.
