As my feed subscribers go up (I hit my November goal of 50 a week or so ago and am still climbing), my page rank appears to be going down. Or, to be more accurate, it is just plain gone. When I checked in last night (with several different page rank checkers), I was shocked to find that my lovely PR 3 had become a PR 0 sometime in the last couple of days since I checked.

At first I felt panicked. I actually do not get a lot of traffic from Google and do not at all rely on Adsense for the income of this blog. However, I do use PayPerPost and other services that include pagerank when considering how much you get paid.

So what happened?

All I can see wrong is that I started aggressively using TNX.net ads. I must have misread how it works because I thought they would slowly add the links I ordered. They surely do not because I just added links a week or so ago and they show 719 incoming links that they have placed. Yikes! I removed those links because I am not planning to use TNX.net in the near future anyway so maybe I will see a change at some point.

The only other thing it could be is that I have not been too great at remembering to ‘no-follow’ my paid posting links. I hoenstly just forget to do that. And I suppose that could have been the reason for the slap as well.

In any case, it appears that I really have gone from a PR 3 to a PR 0 in a week. I’m not sure the last time Mark updated the Make Money Online Top 100, but that shows Pajama Professional at #150 with a PR 2. So it appears that at some point I dropped to that on my way to zero.

I truly loved my pagerank, but since everyone is leaning away from Google lately – as far as blogging goes – I am not too worried. If PayPerPost and other stop offering my quality posting opportunities, I might have a bit more of a problem with it. However, for the time being I am considering it a minor setback and am not going to stress out too much about it.

Once your pagerank has been slapped, is it hard to get it back? Or is it even possible without officially contesting it? What I mean is: if I watch my links and add my no-follows do I have a chance of regaining my PR 3 or did my lack of attention forever make me suck in Google’s eyes? I would appreciate any feedback on this just so I know what to expect.

  • Quality and PR of your incoming liks are also important..If you are getting 719 incoming links from PR0-1 sites.. They will not help you much.. I do not think nofollow tags is the reason on your case..

    Thanks

  • Hi Sara,

Mark was right. It was due to PayPerJoke. I wrote my style of article on it here: Pay Per Jokes Crime and Google Does Evil

    It's a rough article, but that's my niche. ;-)

ps. I'm glad to see you're starting to feel it's ok to not care about Pagerank. After that article, go to search box in the navbar and type in "vaseline" if you want another unorthodox one about Google PR and paid links. Best wishes...

  • Did having a high PR give you any advantage apart maybe from selling links at higher prices.

Most of the time the no. 1 ranking site in a search does not have the highest PR.

Good content that people want to read is the key to having a popular blog. Word of mouth or links from other blogs builds traffic. Traffic builds income.

I have some PR3 blogs which I never update that have PR3 and TLA. The PR3 has been there for 2 years. So go understand.

  • Hi Sara,

If you've got the traffic then page rank isn't worth worrying about. Traffic speaks for itself with real visitors on your site. Who cares if Google think your site isn't worth enough to get couple of green pixels :D

Loving the new blog design btw!

  • Bobby,

Thanks for stopping by. It is really great to hear from you. I completely understand your need to take a break and I am glad that you were able to work things out.

As for the pagerank fiasco, I think it is becoming less and less important. I do occasionally write paid posts and I am glad that PPP is creating their own algorithm.

I will talk to you soon. =)

  • Hi Sara! I apologize for the long absence but I had to have it. It really sucks that you (and I) lost your page rank. I don't have a single paid post on Revellian Dot Com...none.

I once was a member of text link ads but have long since cancelled my account. The problem I have with pagerank is that you will never know in any absolute way, why you lost it.

Many sites with tons of PPP articles didn't lose anything. Many new sites with just a few hundred links have a PR4.

I give up on PR. PPP will have their new ranking system so you can make more money regardless of your Google status, which is good if you are into that.

Anyway, I'm trying to start getting around and reading and wanted to tell you that I have missed you a lot and will try to make it here much more often:)

  • Mark,

I think that must be it. Must be time to officially stop caring about pagerank.

    Thanks for the link.

  • you were probably slapped because google just devalued many sites to paid posts
