Site Pro News published a great Search Engine Optimization Checklist. You can find it at the link or, if you’re in a hurry, here’s the Lucky Thirteen:

  1. Check Search Engine Crawl Error Pages
  2. Create/update robots.txt and sitemap files
  3. Check Googlebot activity reports
  4. Check how your site looks to browsers without image and JavaScript support
  5. Ensure that all navigation is in HTML, not images
  6. Check that all images include ALT text
  7. Use Flash content sparingly
  8. Ensure that each page has a unique
  9. Make sure that important page elements are HTML
  10. Be sure to target keywords in your page content
  11. Don’t use frames
  12. Make sure that your server is returning a 404 error code for unfound pages
  13. Ensure that crawlers will not fall into infinite loops

Search Engine Optimization can save you from spending a bunch of money on Adwords and other PPC programs. Naturally appearing on top results pages is really the best free advertising there is. I need to do some research on the robots.txt file. I have one, but I know it’s not optimized because I’ve never done anything to it. Does anyone have any recommendations for a resource on optimizing that file?

  • Ah, cool tips. Thanks.
  • Right on. It's just so confusing for a newbie like me. There are just a lot of list to follow that I often find myself so overwhelmed.
  • I have just started blogging. SEO is not very important to me as for now because I need to focus on my content first. Without good content, I will not be able to retain visitors.
  • What about unique title tag for each page?
or to create CSS file? Or link building?

    Patrick,

I'm just starting to pay attention to SEO stuff and it is really annoying. No one seems to know exactly what the search engines want or when that might change. I think I'm going to do a few simple things and hope for the best. All that 4% keywords, watch your H1 and H2 tags and don't rely on reciprocal links ... it's head spinning. I'd rather just focus on content and let the rest take car of itself.

  • SEO is a pain in the you know what. The thing I don't like is that you can't get a quick feedback to see if what you did really improved. I've done some SEO work only to have my Google PR drop! Good list!
