I like the article, but it seems some peoples comments are defensive towards other writer's habits.
So, just out of curiousity... is it so wrong for a person to try and make some extra cash by doing link building and making comments on blogs? If they really are reading the blogs and trying to pay attention are they still "spammers" or smart business people? Isn't one of the points here that it's ok to write short creative comments, but just to keep them relative and not generic? Just playing a bit of devil's advocate.

I love #4. (hmmm... the sarcastic one in me wants to stop there!)
It is also always helpful to make a comment in regards to a line of content, not just a title or such. Show that you didn't speed read, but paid attention.
(so, did I pass the test?!?!)

Well I'm almost scared to give you a compliment after that post, but what the heck. Great post. These are good tips for new bloggers who don't necessarily know blog comment etiquette. As far as debating goes, I agree it's ok...for some blogs. However, in some blogs one could be viewed as a trouble starter. So I suggest an approach similar to your advice on linking...check out other comments before making an adversarial remark to see if it is acceptable.
