I have written about Netspend before but after trusting them with my money for almost two years now I want to give you an update. I still love this service. This won’t be a long article, but I’m going to outline my five favorite things about using Netspend.

Number Five: Referrals

Each time you refer a new user to Netspend, you get $5 in your account and so do they. It’s not much, but a fun little promotional touch – especially for those who still don’t quite trust their money on the internet.

Number Four: Choice of Fee Plans

No, you don’t have to pay money to use Netspend, but certain fees apply if you use your card. To avoid this, you pay $9.95 a month to avoid fees when you use your card as a debit or credit card. This might seem annoying, but if you read number one, you’ll see why my $10 a month is totally worth it. You can also choose to pay $69.95 for the whole year. Or you could pay nothing and just pay regular fees for certain transactions. I’ve never regretted paying a small fee for this great service.

Number Three: Instant Balance Update

Netspend is completely mobile – from their website to text messages letting you know whenever your balance changes. If you want to check your balance you send a quick text message and within seconds you know how much money you have. But the real bonus is that you can choose to have a text message sent to you each time a transaction is processed. This means that I can see right away if strange things are going on and I always know how much money I have.

Number Two: Money as Soon as you Need it

This reason is really two in one. First, Netspend is extremely compatible with PayPal. Instead of waiting days to transfer money from my PayPal account to my Netspend account, it takes hours – tops. Usually it’s virtually instant. I have a PayPal debit card, but I rarely use it anymore because the money can be transferred to my – supersafe – Netspend account superfast.

The second part of this is that Netspend is constantly releasing new features. My favorite new feature is the instant new debit number. If your card is lost, stolen or highjacked, you can cancel it and Netspend will immediately issue you new – virtual – account information that you can use online or over the phone to purchase things or pay bills. While you are waiting for your new card to arrive, you won’t be left hanging.

Number One: Customer Service and Protection

I am constantly signing up for random membership sites so I can review them for this blog. This means that my card details have occassionally been stolen. Last year, some lovely porn addict signed me up for several porn sites. Because I get text messages whenever money goes in or comes out of my account, I knew within seconds that I had paid $49.95 to a company name I’d never heard of. This wasn’t odd because of all the membership sites I join, but what was odd was that when I looked up the company online it turned out that they owned websites with – albeit funny – clearly porn-related URLs.

I called Netspend and let them know I was going to try to get the subscriptions cancelled. I talked quickly to a real person who understood the problem and they said that if I called the company who’d charged me they might remove the charge. The customer service rep said that if the company wouldn’t cancel it, they’d step in and help and also put my card number on a porn blacklist. The company ended up cancelling the charges and Netspend did indeed add my details to a blacklist. And that was the end of that problem.

Netspend has a ton of other great features from graphs to show you where you are spending your money to excellent customer service across the board. I haven’t included my affiliate ID in this article because I want to be clear that I really just love this service and am not looking for referrals. I hope you’ll check it out and enjoy it as much as I do.

  • The problem with Netspend, Money Bookers, Alert Pay and all the others, to me at least is that they aren't Paypal. At this point pretty much everyone has a Paypal account, so people don't think twice about using it as a payment mechanism...all of these others are dubious at best to the general public. I think I'd lose too many sales if I made the switch.
  • You need a bank account to send the paypal money to. This gets confirmed by Paypal when you set it up. Then you can deal with netspend

  • Yes, the amount you receive from ssd will most likely be a smaller sum since you have money elsewhere. Even if it was just a few $100's in a savings account that would be considered when signing up for ssd. Your best bet would be tio talk with a case worker in your local ssd office

Yes, your balance CAN go negative but I'm not sure exactly how that works. I have had customers with (and have myself had) negative balances as much as $15 or $20. There doesn't seem to be any info about that in the welcome packets that we hand out with new cards. Haven't had a chance yet to ask anyone at partner services. We just make sure to have people check the balance before they add money to their card so they don't end up with less than they need on it after making up a negative balance!
  • Nice Post. There are many types of trusts. It all depends on how it was set up. What guidance documents the trustee is following and how well you make your arguement to that trustee.
  • I have written echecks that were exceeding the amount of money in my netspend visa account. it says that its not a credit card. can my balance go into negative.

I am an employee of a Netspend partner (I sell Netspend cards) and they're easy to sell because they really are pretty great. However, I've been hearing rumors about Paypal and Metabank accounts (like Netspend) that are disturbing. Trying to find the truth online has been even more distressing. I haven't had any problems at all myself, my Paypal experiences have been like yours: easy and almost instantaneous. But I'm hearing and reading about people's accounts being frozen, and some posts.sites state firmly that Paypal will not accept Metabank accounts. Since you can both spell and use punctuation (need I mention that the majority of the Netspend nay-sayers can't?), I'm hoping you might be able to help me get to the bottom of this. (You can email me at i_has_spoken@hotmail.com and I would love to hear from you)
  • I like the feature of Netspend like graphs to show you where you are spending your money to excellent customer service across the board.
  • How much is the commission fee?
  • First time heard about Netspend and i'll check it out this site.
  • Good advice about trust money. I'll try Netspend. Thanks..
  • The money sits in PayPal until you move it, it doesn't automatically fund your bank account or in your case your netspend card.
  • Right, but unlike some bank accounts that take a few days to transfer from PayPal, when you transfer from PayPal to a Netspend account it is virtually instant.
  • Sorry to be ignorant, but what's the point of NetSpend? Is it like a middleman between paypal and your bank account?
  • Snowblowers,

Not ignorant at all, that's actually a really good question. You can use Netspend as a middleman or - like me - you can use it as your primary financial institution. They even offer savings accounts. I do keep an account open with US Bank, but since nearly all my financial transactions are done either online or via debit/credit, I find that the Netspend account is really all I need.

  • This seems to be a good service. I think i am going to give it a try. The only concern i have is about security. I don't know how secure my financial information would be with Netspend.
  • Coolsat,

The problems I had with someone else using my account info were the fault of a membership site I signed up for, not the Netspend security. And Netspend was quicky to fix it. And, also, as someone mentioned in another comment, they now offer "virtual" accounts you can use and immediately delete if you are afraid a site you are paying with your Netspend account isn't secure.

    Sara
  • This company tells you they will put all your money on a prepaid card and then when you give them the money they donot post it to the account. They give you the runaround when you call and tell them its not in your account placing blame everywhere but on themselves.
  • I haven't had any problems like that at all and I've been with them for going on two years. They are always super-helpful and when I add money (either through direct deposit or at a "refill" location like Safeway) it is immediately available.

  • I got allot of money on paypal and I bought the netspend card but tried to transfer it an it does not let me please help..I tried on paypal i clicked withdraw or send but it doesn't work please give me instructions.
  • The Netspend site says it takes 2-3 business days to transfer the funds, but the longest I've ever had to wait was an hour. The process to transfer funds is basically in two sections. First, you have to do a one-time setup with PayPal and enter your account information from Netspend. The information PayPal needs can be found by logging into your Netspend account, selecting the "Add/Manage Money" drop-down menu and then clicking on "PayPal Transfers." Write down the Bank Name, Account Type, Routing Number and Account Number so you have it ready.

    1. Now you Log into your PayPal account and Select "Withdraw".
    2. In the "Withdraw Funds" screen, click "Transfer funds to your bank account".
    3. In the "Withdraw Funds by Electronic Transfer" screen, click "Add Bank Account".
    4. In the "Add Bank Account (U.S. Bank Accounts Only)" screen, enter the Netspend account information you wrote down: Bank Name, Account Type, Routing Number and Account Number (twice).
    5. Once the informatio has been entered, just click "Add Bank Account".

You might see an "Alert" screen, but you can just OK it. Your Card Account is now set up to receive funds via PayPal and you won't have to complete these steps again.

Now you are ready to transfer funds to your NetSpend Visa Card:

    1. Log in to PayPal account (if you aren't already still logged in) and select "Withdraw".
    2. In the "Withdraw Funds" screen, click "Transfer funds to your bank account".
    3. In the "Withdraw Funds by Electronic Transfer" screen, enter the desired amount, select "META Checking" (Your Netspend account) and click "Continue".
    4. Click "Submit" to confirm the transfer.
    5. The transaction will appear as "DEPOSIT/CREDIT FROM PAYPAL" in your Netspend Transaction History.

That is all it takes. The Netspend site has clear instructions and you can always contact support if you have any issues, but it should go pretty smoothly if you just follow the steps carefully and enter all the information correctly.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I have a Netspend account to fund my poker stars account. they have been great, quick and easy to work with. you can access your account online as well.
  • To be honest, I haven't really heard of NetSpend. It sounds like they are a quality company that cares about their members though. If I was doing more online transactions, I would definitely look into this further.
  • I used that bank account info to verify my paypal account. Can I add funds using my netspend provided bank account from meta bank?
  • Seaward,

You can transfer from PayPal to Netspend by following the instructions I outlined above. In order to transfer from Netspend to PayPal, all you have to do is set up the Netspend (MetaBank Checking) account as your backup funding source and funds will automatically be taken from your Netspend account to pay for any purchases made through PayPal if there are no funds in your account. You don't need to perform any transfer functions, it all happens automatically as long as you select your Netspend account as your primary backup funding source.

    Sara
  • I have been a member of Netspend and I have to agree with you they are great.
  • Thanks for the post! I will definitely subscribe. With my experience with netspend, I would highly recommend it. They really take care of you.
  • Customer
NetSpend also has a feature called virtual account where you can create a temporary card from the website. The virtual card will have all the necessary information on it to make your purchase, and after you are finished you can destroy the card. It makes it a little easier to safe-guard your account.
  • Sounds like Netspend is a good company. I may have to look into them because I am pretty scared of using my financial information on the web.
  • Britney,

If you want to safeguard your financial info, Netspend is definitely the way to go. Even if someone does "steal" your info, the customer service is excellent and they'll take care of it quickly and nicely.
