Christmas eve. This just might be my favorite day of the year. So, for the first time in a long time, I am not going to talk about making money, I am going to talk about spending it. Prepare yourself for an excited holiday ramble…

I absolutely love giving gifts and this year I have put together the coolest package ever for my roommate’s 11-year-old. He’s my favorite kid ever and he is so much fun to shop for because he is always really excited about both giving and getting presents. I went very overboard this year shopping for him. I put together a sort of set of presents.

He loves to run, but just isn’t very motivated about going out and doing it. He has an iPod Nano, so when I saw the Nike Plus system at Best Buy I knew I had found the perfect gift for him. As far as I know, he doesn’t even know that Nike Plus exists so he’s going crazy trying to guess what I have bought for him. I wrapped each piece separately and numbered them. When I walked into the living room yesterday morning I saw that he had them all organized. He will be opening these presents this evening and I think I am as excited as he is.

Since I am dying to see him open this stuff, I’m sharing it here just to get it out of my system. Here is his (carefully numbered) set of gifts:

  1. Sony S2 sports headphones

I did a bunch of research on this after reading that the normal iPod earbuds fall out of your ears and get all sweaty when you try to use them for jogging. These headpones allow outsides sounds so they’re safe for outdoor jogging, the headband keeps them from slipping out and they have some sort of sweat protection that means they won’t short out after a few runs.
  2. Nike Plus Nano armband

There were several choices of armbands, but I figured if I was buying the plus system I might as well go all out. Also this armband is designed so you can easily change songs. The reason why it is second on my list is because it starts to show the cohesiveness, but doesn’t give away the coolest parts.
  3. $25 iTunes Gift Card

There are special Nike Plus playlists created by famous athletes. I was going to just choose one for him and buy it, but he is developing his own musical tastes so the gift card lets him pick a couple of playlists on his own. I think he’ll appreciate that.
  4. Nike Jasari Plus running shoe

I got the midnight blue pictured on the main page and had to order directly from Nike because he wears a hard-to-find size right now. They are absolutely gorgeous sneakers and I want to keep them. But not quite as much as I want to see his face when he opens them.
  5. Nike Plus Sensor and Receiver

Bringing it all together is the Nike Plus sensor and receiver. The sensor goes in your shoe (in this case, the shoes I bought have a spot built into the insole) and the receiver plugs into your Nano’s docking port. This system tracks your runs, lets you set goes and all kinds of other cool stuff.

And that is the most exciting part of my Christmas. Every once in awhile I remember that I am actually getting gifts, but mostly this year is all about watching him open this set of gifts that I have so carefully orchestrated.

So what about you? What do you love most about the holidays? I know everyone celebrates different holidays and in vastly different ways, but if you are in the midst of yours or looking forward to it, what is your favorite part? What is on your wishlist? What is the favorite gift you have bought this year?

  • Wow! That sounds like an amazing Christmas for a special little child. You are quite generous. I love the holidays, giving is so much fun. Especially when you give things to people that couldn't/wouldn't get something for themselves. Merry Belated Christmas :)
  • So sad to know you spent your Christmas in the hospital, Thomas!

Anyway, I had a great time spending my holidays with my family and close friends. I never expect lots of material gifts instead a blessing for inner soul and a prayer for good health and long life. I think that is the best gift that any person can ever received...I want to spend more time with my family, there love and care makes me strong and let me live my life to the fullest.

    God Bless You All!

  • love the armband :) thanks for the link!
  • People in first world nations are lucky to have holiday season.. people in third world nations are not that lucky though. Poor chaps have to work round the year. Anycase, atleast they can escape the sinking feeling when a holiday comes to an end and working season begins.

  • I hadn't heard of them, either ... and I have to admit, it really does sound like a great system. If it had GPS I'd have to wait in line for my own system...

I come from a family of atheists, so for me the holidays were a nice break from work, giving me a chance to head out to the peninsula. My birthday is the winter solstice, though, and I got some hiking gear. I'm so tempted at this point to head back west across the sound to ring in the New Year.

  • Opening the presents did in fact live up to the hype. =) In fact, he almost cried. He had never heard of Nike Plus, as I thought, and he thought it was the coolest thing ever.

    thanks for asking! =)

  • I used to spend all my time trying to guess what I was going to get for Christmas. My son just turned 4 and I am so excited - probably as much as he is - about watching him open his presents. This is the first year that he's been old enough to really understand what is going on. I've been baking all day because I had to have the "perfect" cookie for Santa and he's been testing them and telling me "too sweet, not sweet enough, too crumbly, and so on". So what did I get my little darlin'? The big present that he's been begging for is a Power Rangers "big boy" bicycle (training wheels? You bet! Protective helmet - that too!). The other biggie? I finally broke down and bought a Wii. The funny thing is that we're not a big video game family but between the commercials and our friends (all ages) we've heard nothing but great things about it.

I hope your roommate's son loves those presents and a very Merry Christmas to you!
